Address of the New President

September, 2005
Daisuke Uemura, PE
President of the Japan Society of Professional Engineers

I am Daisuke Uemura, the new President of the Japan Society of Professional Engineers.

Five years have passed since this society was instituted under the mission of "enhancing licensed Professional Engineers' ability, social positions, and ethical standards of conduct". Since the establishment, our society has been expanding its activities and the number of memberships, thanks to your supports.

This year we also started some new activities, including the collaboration with the Japan Philanthropic Association to promote people and corporations' social contributions.

I believe that our society has developed like this due to the great combinations of its boards' enterprises and members' participations to them. Mr. Hitoshi Hirose, the former President, had leaded this society so far, and I would like to follow him to accelerate this expansion.

To realize this goal, I would like to strengthen the ties with mass media to appeal the activities of our society and PE license itself. Plus, I would like to expand the areas of our activities that non-engineers can also join.

Recently, powerful natural disasters cause serious damages around the world, and the environment and energy crises have become more serious. In this situation, the roles of engineers with global viewpoints and high ethics are getting important. This means that the social responsibilities of our society and its members are getting more and more significant.

I do make the opportunities for our members to talk, think, and act for social welfare and peace as engineers.

Thank you very much.
